Meet The Fly Fishing Blog Writers

Hi. My name is Ron, and I'll be your fishing guide during your visit here at The Fun Times Guide to Fly Fishing. Yep, that absolutely perfect for radio face pictured to the right is yours truly with a nice Brown Trout on the Clark Fork River in Montana.

This blog, my fly fishing blog, will explore all things fly fishing from rods and reels to lines and leaders. From fish to fishermen and fisherwomen... fisherkids and fisherdogs, we'll explore the flies (bugs as we like to call 'em) and knots and landing nets and casting strokes. We'll look at fickle fish and bug behavior. Drifts and mends and strikes and long distance releases. Reading water to wading water. We'll take it from Fly Fishing 101.

Why A Fly Fishing Blog?

When I first got started fly fishing, I found myself lost in information overload that was written for the advanced angler using all of the jargon that only seasoned fly fishermen would understand. Things like "Take yer size 24 BWO and tie it on to a 7X flouro. Make sure ya' drown it in gink or you'll never even get a sip." just made it more confusing.

One of my greatest pleasures in life is introducing people to fly fishing. Watching them catch a first fish on a fly. Watching them "get it" when it all comes together. I love sharing what I've learned, in an easy to understand manner. We'll take this one in plain English and hopefully, have fun times doing it!

I'm currently in Montana, on the banks of the Clark Fork River between Butte and Missoula, working as a fly fishing guide. Not only do I really love this part of the United States, I am also very thankful to have the opportunity to do this for a living.

How I Got Here

Not long ago, during a conversation with my wife about the types of adventures we might like to pursue next she asked, "So, what do you really want to do? In your heart of hearts, if money wasn't an issue, what would you do?"

In less than a heart of hearts heartbeat I replied: "I'd be a songwriting fishing guide and do some freelance writing for anybody that would read my stuff. And, you know those half dozen book ideas I've started? I'd like to have time to finish those. I don't know that they will ever sell, but I'd like to write them."

Fast-forward a few months and... here I am! Living in Montana (Montana licensed fishing guide number 12,166). Writing a fly fishing blog. And living the dream. I am a blessed man.

I come from a long line of fishermen. My father, his father and his father, were all anglers. I cannot remember a time in my life that I haven't been fishing. I've cast earth worms under a red and white bobber to bluegill on a Zebco Spincast reel and I've drifted worms and salmon eggs downstream to rainbow trout in the high mountains when I was young on the same Zebco set up.

I've dangled minnows for crappie (pronounced craw-pea, by the way) in rivers and lakes. I've taken my share of white bass trolling plugs behind the boat. I've been fortunate to have learned some about striper fishing. I was even a competitive tournament angler on a bass circuit at one time in my life. Fly fishing though, has captured my heart and soul.

Fly fishing, for me, is relaxed. Therapeutic. Cathartic. Meditative. Refreshing. Add to all of that, that fly fishing is often done in some of the most beautiful places on earth, and you'll begin to get "it". The "it" being, why fly fishing is good for my soul.

I'm no expert on this subject, but I do manage to trick a few fish now and then, for myself and clients. It has become a passion for me. There is so much to learn and enjoy. We can spend a lifetime of learning on the great waterways of this earth, rod in hand, curiosity in hearts, appreciation for the Creator's creation. It is here, at The Fun Times Guide to Fly Fishing, that I aim to share some of the things that I've lived and learned about fly fishing with you, my fellow fishing enthusiasts.

Thanks for stopping by. I look forward to hearing your fish stories!

Wishing you sharp hooks and tight lines,

-- Ron
